Zion Williamson gets Team U.S.A. invite ahead of 2019 FIBA World Cup and 2020 Olympics – ZION WILL DUNK

maximios May 13, 2025

Things just keep getting better for Zion Williamson. The presumptive #1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, one that will likely place him in an New Orleans Pelicans jersey at the start of next season, has now been formally invited to take part for team USA camp.

If he accepts, Zion will be part of a 10-man “select” squad of younger players that have a shot to make U.S.A. Basketball’s Senior National Team that will represent the United States in the 2019 FIBA World Cup as well as the 2020 Olympics.

This was confirmed by U.S.A.B. chairman, Jerry Colangelo in a phone interview.

“We want to indoctrinate (Williamson) in terms of U.S.A. Basketball,” Colangelo said. “We want to give him a platform to see how he can compete with some of the vets that are going to be there.”

He’ll only make the FIBA World Cup roster if his play shows that he belongs. Injuries and superstars denying invitations also play a part too when it comes to non-Olympics participation. In other case, it would be impressive if he was to make the squad in just 1.5 months after being drafted — a team that’s already packed with established All-Stars and NBA superstars.

As Colangelo noted in the call, Zion may follow the same path as maybe-(maybe not)-teammate Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans started out on the select team before being promoted to the full 12-man roster for the London Olympics in 2012 even though Davis had never played a game in the NBA at that point.

The FIBA World Cup tournament will be played in China later this year spanning approximately two weeks from August 31 until September 15th.

It’s a matter of time until Zion Williamson becomes a New Orleans Pelican. And the city, the NBA and the world will be abuzz to see how the basketball phenom will perform in his first year.

No doubt, the Crescent City will embrace Zion; not only because of his humble nature, his passion for the game, his highlight-worthy basketball plays, and because the 6-6 forward leaves it all on the floor every time he plays. The city will respect that.

Having created a fan site for Zion, no doubt have a lot of faith in him and we’re confident that he’ll immediately win over the NOLA, if he hasn’t already. If you feel the way we do about Zion Williamson, feel free to wear it on your sleeve or have it represented on your chest with these Zion Williamson t-shirts.

More About Zion Williamson Shirts

Another reason why New Orleans will take to Zion Williamson is that he’s also from the region. Born and raised in South Carolina then moving up to North Carolina to play basketball at Duke, Zion is much more familiar to those in the Big Easy than a player from Los Angeles or Portland.

Shaquille O'Neal says he'd rather have Bol Bol than Zion Williamson – WHAT?! – ZION WILL DUNK

maximios May 13, 2025

Stop me if you’ve heard this one — WHAT?!

Shaquille O’Neal recently asserted that he would rather build his franchise around Bol Bol than Zion Williamson. Nothing against the 44th pick in the 2019 draft; we’re sure he’s a fine player, but to choose Bol over Williamson shows that Shaq has some very severe reasoning skills. Not to mention bias as Bol played alongside his son Shareef.

“(Bol) and Shareef are friends and I’ve seen the potential what this kid can do.” said Shaq. “For example, when I was his coach in AAU, we never lost. He’s got it all. He’s (7-2), can shoot, dribble, can pass. Nobody really knows it because he was always hurt.”

That’s all well and good, but though Bol’s height is a bonus, his weight (236lbs) isn’t. That alone should have informed Shaq that Bol wouldn’t be nearly as ready as Zion. That’s never stopped Shaq and he continued bashing Zion as if he’d never seen the kid play:

“Zion is dunker, dunker, dunker, dunker,” O’Neal continued. “He ain’t gonna be able to do all that (in the NBA). I was the man in high school. I was the man in college. As soon as I got to the NBA, I was No. 50. I had to start (improving). I know (Williamson’s) a powerful dunker, but he’s going to have to develop something else.”

For being an NBA analyst and former player, Shaq has been derelict in researching Williamson’s game. He isn’t just a dunker, he makes shots in traffic, he goes after offensive rebounds, he’s proven he can hit the mid range shot and even step back and make a three.

Shaquille O’Neal’s hypocrisy isn’t lost on us. He came into the league as a dunker, won several championships, and left the league as a dunker; having not really developed much outside of that.

I think it’s safe to say that Zion is already a more-rounded player (more-rounded, not better) than Shaq was when he left as a player.

In 6 minutes, Zion Williamson goes 4-4 from three; turns NBA debut into must-watch TV – ZION WILL DUNK

maximios May 13, 2025

No one would told you that they tuned in to see Zion Williamson last night to hit three-pointers, but that’s where we are today. Zion started out each quarter casually gaiting up and down the court; trying to get into the flow of the game/not trying to force the issues too much, but when the fourth quarter started, you could tell he was engaged.

We full on believe that Williamson got his powers on the play when he jumped over Jakob Poeltl for a rebound, took a couple dribbles and fired a cross court pass to E’Twaun Moore for a basket. We think that rebound over the 7’0 activated Zion and from there until approximately 6 minutes left in the game, he scored 17 straight points for the Pelicans including 4-4 from three, giving them their first lead since the first quarter.

Zion ended the game with 22 points on 8-11 shooting, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in just 18 minutes of play. Did he live up to the hype? Yes, but he was very close to having a disappointing debut (which would have completely understandable).

That fourth quarter was explosive — something the fans and 165 credentialed media (usually Pels only get 25 media requests) came to see — and it only served to ignite the hype machine.

And we didn’t even get to see him dunk once.

Zion Williamson's Duke Stats – ZION WILL DUNK

maximios May 13, 2025

In his one year at Duke, Zion Williamson averaged 22.61 points per game on an amazing 68% from the field and 8.9 rebounds.

On top of his scoring and rebounding numbers in college, the 6-7 power forward and future #1 NBA Draft pick also averaged 2 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. He shot 68% from the free throw line and 33.8% from distance while playing approximately 33 minutes per game.

Although Zion and fellow freshman and 2019 NBA draftee R.J. Barrett both averaged 22.6 points for the Blue Devils, Ziom was technically the second leading scorer on that Duke team behind. That’s because Barrett averaged a mere and miniscule 0.02 more points than Zion — 22.63 to 22.61 ppg.

Zion Williamson Jordan Brand Deal: Nike welcomes Williamson to the Jordan Brand family – ZION WILL DUNK

maximios May 13, 2025

It was announced today that Zion Williamson was signed by Nike to a multi-year endorsement contract… well, not Nike exactly, but Zion officially signed with the Jordan Brand, a subsidiary of the global shoe superpower.

“Zion’s incredible determination, character and play are inspiring,” Michael Jordan said in a statement. “He’s an essential part of the new talent that will help lead the brand into the future. He told us he would ‘shock the world,’ and asked us to believe him. We do.”

“I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of the Jordan Brand family,” Williamson said in the same Nike press release. “Since I was a kid, I dreamed of making it to the league and having the type of impact on the game Michael Jordan had and continues to have today. He was one of those special athletes I looked up to, and I really can’t express how happy and excited I am for this journey.”

The company has a stable of NBA superstars that endorse Nike. And Nike also is the official jersey provider for the NBA.

Williamson’s deal has been reported as a seven years – $75 million dollar contract. Clearly Williamson has forgiven Nike for his shoes exploding on the court earlier this year in a match up against the North Carolina Tar Heels; choosing the Jordan Brand over rivals such as Adidas and Under Armour and reportedly a full-court press by PUMA.

ZION WILL DUNK: All About Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans

maximios May 13, 2025

After starting out in soccer and football, Zion Williamson fell in love with basketball at the age of five. At that point, he decided to put his energy into becoming the best basketball player he would be. Fast forward over a dozen years later and Williamson is being talked about as the next transcendent basketball player. At 6’7 and 260 pounds with an otherworldly vertical leap, what most notice about Zion on the basketball court is his combination of size and athleticism, and the dunks. Oh, Zion Will Dunk.

However, there have been more countless basketball players with the talent, athleticism, and size that never panned out. What makes Williamson special is his high basketball IQ and his ability to understand how best to maximize his skills, talent and abilities to perform not only on an individual level, but in ways that help his teams win.

That rare combination of brains and brawn has made Williamson the consensus #1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Most see the dunks and highlights, but Zion is much more than your everyday dunker, and luckily NBA teams (and basketball heads) know that.

“I kind of hate being classified as a dunker,” Williamson told ESPN. “Coach (Mike Krzyzewski) wouldn’t have recruited me if I was just a dunker. But I guess people on the outside don’t understand that. I can’t play to impress other people. I’m playing to get better for myself and my teammates.”

And if Williamson was solely a human highlight reel and now much else, he certainly wouldn’t have won so many high school championships nor would he have been joined fellow transcendent hoopers Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis as the only Freshmen to ever be voted the consensus National College Player of the Year.

Nor would Zion have been voted AP player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year or named a consensus first-team All-American among many other awards and accomplishments during his one season at Duke.
